These look like the actual errors.

- Is /var full?

- Are you running another instance of apt/dpkg/synaptic/apt-get?
(Check with ps axf, and kill -9 if you see one)

 - What do the permissions look like on:
    - /var/lib/dpkg,
    - /var/lib/aptitude,
    - /var/lib/apt, and their respective contents?
