FWIW I installed Etch on two systems last week but edited
my /etc/apt/sources.list to track testing rather than etch then
aptitude full-upgraded.

I haven't had any of the problems you mention with iceweasel or rsync
but I did not install any obvious gnome related stuff. I do get the
opera gpg error 'cos I haven't worked out the exact syntax to use
'apt-key add -'

I'll now try installing acroread on the spare system to see if I get
the acroread-debian-files error.

Done :-)

I typed 'aptitude install acroread' and acroread-debian-files
was installed 'automatically' along with 3 library packages. No error
messages at all.

The laptop has only windowmaker and the 'spare' system has the bits
of KDE I think it might need rather than the 'everything + the
kitchen sink' that seems to be the default these days on live CDs.

( The spare system has KDE as a sort of windross lookalike to try
and tempt people like my wife away from w2k. )
