I haven't specifically used either Wetherspoons or McDonalds but have used
hotspots both here and in the US fairly extensively in the past and while
they might block some ports (I've never done a proper test) I've never
come across one which blocks ssh.

That's not to say that there isn't a hotspot provider out there that
doesn't of course, but they'd certainly be in the minority.
