While not a server I have just had a very similar problem on a laptop, the
laptop memory was quoted as PC2100\PC2700 but putting PC2700 memory into the
laptop and it failed to boot, it would only take PC2100.
A couple of people I spoke to said that the laptop could of been an early
adopter of the PC2100 standard and as such the bios was not as as mature as
later bios's which are happy to run with PC2700.
Eventually got hold of some PC2100 memory and it worked perfectly.
