The best way to find out about who is contributing what to the Linux
kernel is to subscribe to the Linux Kernel Mailing List, or read one of
the many public archives of it, e.g. http://lkml.org/

To find out about their backgrounds, I'd suggest reading interviews in
magazines or their websites.

I wouldn't read too much into the argument. Licensing arguments occur
often in the FLOSS community, most of the time they fizzle out when
everyone gets bored.
