The best distribution is most likely the one you know best,
and can find support on. Regardless of what anybody else will
tell you.

If it is "lowend" then compiling from source will be a little
painful. Still I guess the services will be minimal so it might
not be a big deal.

My choice.
For those that say Ubuntu I'd ask what the gain is in the role
of a server..? (Sure their desktop is pretty/simpler/different but
my understanding is that Ubuntu server is much less customized.)

If you can pay for it, but it is a little heavyweight. The Centos
or Fedora Core distros seem good, but upgrades between releases have
been historically more problematic than Debian/Gentoo.
