You could extend that idea by encrypting the external disk with
something like dm-crypt / LUKS. That way you could carry the disk
around with you, or even leave it periodically at a friends house.
You could even go further and have several disks in use, all stored in
different semi-benign but physically insecure locations, safe in the
knowledge that only you have the passphrase to decrypt the contents.
